WYCOMBE TOWN RETAIN CHALLENGE CUP

Wycombe Town retained the Challenge Cup with a 2-1 victory over Royal Standard at Burnam FC. The goals came from Lee Thompson and Aaron Couch. The match, played at Burnham's The Gore ground in front of a large crowd took a while to get going, played on a tricky, hard surface there wasn't the chance to play a lot of football and theball spent a lot of time in the air, however Town did start the brighterof the two, Aaron Couch was having a lot of joy down the right wing,Woodward played him in and the keeper made a great save, a Thompsonheader went just over the bar, they were getting closer and they tookthe lead midway through when Mason slipped Couch through, the Standardkeeper was unable to hold onto the shot and Lee Thompson was on hand toslam home the rebound from close range. The lead was then doubledminutes later when a weak clearance from the Standard keeper found itsway to Couch who from 35 yards out took the ball down and chipped theball home back over the keepers head and into the net. This clearlydeflated Standard and they were lucky to only go into half time 2 nildown after a few more near misses.
The second half took on a similar pattern, again good football was apremium, the ball going from back to front far too often, a number ofsubstitutions were made by both sides and the play became very scrappywhich due to the scoreline suited Town, Standard needed to push forwardbut rarely troubled the Town backline, marshalled superbly by Shone andChemlal. With time running out Andy Shed got on the end of a throughball and poked the ball past Cooper into the Town goal to make it 2-1, afew nervy moments followed in the remaining 2 minutes of injury time butTown held on to retain their trophy which they won last year beatingChinnor Exiles 4-0.

Elsewhere Wycombe Town 'A' came back from 1-0 down to beat Cross Keys 3-2 (report to follow)
